Register to vote (if you haven't already)
This has absolutely nothing directly to do with saving you money BUT I firmly believe that every American over the age of 18 has a responsibility to inform themselves about the candidates and issues and then to VOTE! You need to be registered by Monday October 4 if you are going to fulfill that responsibility. You can register at the county clerk's office, at dmv if you have other business there (driver's license or state id card) and maybe some other places I don't know of , please comment if you know of other places!

Here a car, there a car, every where a car
Last week I found myself listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio. Mostly I enjoy and agree w/ Dave (author of Total Money Makeover available from Amazon) but last week I found myself thinking that he is not always right.
He was talking to a caller and telling her that priorities (in order) were a place to live, utilities, food on the table, a vehicle w/ a full tank of gas. While I completely agreed w/ Dave on the first 3 and even 6 mos ago would have agreed on the 4th, I found myself thinking that the "need" for a vehicle is totally dependent on where you live and where you actually "need" to be! I grew up w/ the idea that adults need cars and therefore as an adult I needed a car. I found it very interesting that many people in large cities didn't even know how to drive let alone own cars but for me then it was pretty much a "curiosity" rather than a life style I might consider embracing. However, I find myself living on a bus line that goes 90% of the places I want or need to go on a reasonable time table and realize that the cost and upkeep of even a well used car FAR exceeds the cost riding the bus and just renting a car when I need or want to venture farther afield.

Another money saving idea
I have been using the search engine Swag Bucks for a little over a year now and I love it! Cost of textbooks, Oh MY!
As many of you or your grown children head off to college you might have been as shocked as I was to see the "sticker price" on textbooks these days! This morning I read that textbooks make up a full 25% of the cost for a students' college expenses. Considering the way tuition costs have increased recently that is a pretty shocking to contemplate.
Luckily there IS something you can do to help control the cost. The first order of business would be to, as with everything else, shop around. In my experience you can purchase textbooks both new and used from Amazon.com for the same cost or even LESS than the prices in your local college bookstore (and in many states you won't pay sales tax so that makes up for the small shipping cost added) . Furthermore in many cases Amazon will offer you a guaranteed buy back at the end of the semester which greatly exceeds the buy back prices offered by most university bookstores. Amazon.com also allows the option to sell used textbooks which the student has purchased elsewhere. By making judicious purchase at Amazon whenever it was most advantageous and selling on there as well, my older student was able to graduate with less than a net cost (price paid minus selling price) of $800 for books for his bachelor's degree. His sister is well on her way to that goal as well!
